A consortium of international zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens and universities, the MFG works in partnership with the Malagasy Government to conserve its rich biodiversity. Through collaboration and pooling of resources, the MFG maximizes the contribution its individual members can make towards sustainable conservation strategies for the fauna and flora of eastern Madagascar. The MFG’s success is due, in large part, to our in-country team who implement our conservation objectives within the framework of local needs, customs, policies and politics.  Read more below.

What We Do

Conservation Action: We work with multiple partners to reduce the threat of invasive species, propagate endangered tree species for habitat restoration, monitor frog populations for chytrid fungus, patrol Betampona to monitor and report
illegal activities.......
Research: Our research is aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of the complex interrelationships of ecosystem processes, species' ecological needs and anthropogenic disturbances in order to guide conservation strategies...........
Education: Our Saturday School program prepares primary school children to advance to secondary school while also learning about nature; week-long camps introduce older children to environmental concepts through tours and activities in Parc Ivoloina and we raise environmental awareness through multiple venues .......
Capacity Building: We mentor undergraduate and graduate students, teach classes and hold workshops that provide targeted hands-on training in a variety of disciplines, work with farmers to improve the quality and quantity of food they produce and teachers to incorporate active learning strategies.....

Conserving Madagascar's Threatened Plants - One Seed at a Time
The MFG,  Missouri Botanical Garden and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew were awarded a Darwin Initiative grant for the ex-situ conservation of threatened plants from the small, degraded and highly fragmented forest patches of the Ifontsy-Ivoloina River Valleys. The project's two primary objects are to: 1) collect seeds from endemic plants for their preservation at  Silo National des Graines Forestières  (SNFG) and the "Millennium Seed Bank" of RBG Kew, or by their propagation and planting-out at Parc Ivoloina, Parc Botanique et Zoologique de Tsimbazaza and SNGF and 2) increase the capacity in Madagascar for the conservation of flora through training in field botany and horticulture.  Read more.....

The Darwin Initiative is a UK government grants program that helps to protect biodiversity and the natural environment through locally based projects worldwide.
